Non-surgical Facial Treatments: Reversing Time Without Surgery

Choosing to treat signs of age, sun damage, or scars through a surgical form is a big decision. Cost has to be weighed against the benefits gained. Downtime and discomfort also need to be factored in. Fortunately, in the world of cosmetic correction, not everything requires surgery. With today’s technology, you have many non-surgical options for reversing the effects of time or scars.

What can non-surgical treatments address?

Although non-surgical treatments aren’t able to do face-lifts and nose reshaping, they are able to address many other minor issues without the discomfort that comes with surgery. These techniques can address

  • Minor wrinkles.
  • Fine lines
  • Age spots.
  • Sun damage.

Each treatment form comes with its own unique benefits, so speak with Dr. Tolson about which option is best for you.

Types of Non-surgical Treatments

Sometimes, non-surgical procedures are better options than surgical ones for treating minor issues. At your initial consultation Dr, Tolson will discuss your cosmetic goals with you, go over the different options you have to choose from, and lay out the best course of treatment.

Botulinum toxin

Botulinum toxin, better known as Botox, is an injection that relaxes the facial muscles, smoothing away wrinkles and fine lines. The procedure is done in Dr. Tolson’s office and takes about 15 minutes. One of its advantages is that it has no downtime. The effects last about three months, making it more cost-effective than surgery for minor issues.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers go beyond removing wrinkles and fine lines. They are gel-like substance which are injected under the skin, restoring volume to the skin, smoothing fine lines, softening creases, plumping lips, and enhancing the natural contours of your face. Like Botox, no downtime or surgery is involved with dermal fillers. They also come in many different types, each with their own benefits.

  • Hyaluronic acid is often used as a lip filler. The effects last 6 to 12 months, and the filler is eventually absorbed into the skin.

Whether you’re looking to just try out dermal fillers as a way to test-drive the idea of a more permanent cosmetic change through surgery or you’re looking for a long-term solution without the cost of surgery, dermal fillers offer affordable options without the recovery time or risks of surgery.

Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels remove the outer layers of skin. In order to get the best effects, you will need to repeat the process. Chemical peels are performed in the office by either Dr. Tolson or a trained member of his staff. A solution is applied to the skin and left on for a set period of time. The layers of skin will peel off over several days to reveal the new skin underneath. Chemical peels are used to treat age spots and discolorations, to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, to minimize scars, to remove precancerous growths, and to tighten the skin. Depending on the need, Dr. Tolson will decide whether you need a light, medium, or deep peel.

  • Light peels partially penetrate through the epidermis, but leave the dermis underneath untouched. Either a trained aesthetician or nurse can perform a light peel, and no downtime is required.
  • Medium and deep peels reach deeper into the epidermis and penetrate part of the dermis. These are more appropriate for treating advanced signs of aging, sun damage, and severe scars. Dr. Tolson or a trained aesthetician must perform these peels, and several days of downtime are necessary to recover.

Microneedling

Fine, short needles create microscopic injuries to the skin that are invisible to the naked eye. These injuries trigger the body’s natural healing response, causing new collagen and elastin production. Microneedling is safe for all skin types and requires no downtime for healing, meaning you can be out-and-about sooner. To get your desired outcome, multiple sessions are generally needed. Microneedling is good for treating fine wrinkles and lines, acne and surgical scars, sun damage, age spots, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, pore sizes, and texture issues.
